Super Bowl 2014: Renee Fleming will sing the national anthem

Feb. 2. It's the first time an opera singer has had the honor. Last year, Alicia Keys sang it. Previous singers include Cher, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson and the Dixie Chicks.
Fleming, a four-time Grammy winner, will perform before the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Fleming sings jazz and popular music, too, so it will be interesting to see what approach she takes to the song. No doubt she'll be bundled up against the outdoor temps. Singers don't like polar vortexes.
Fleming comes to her football gig straight from New York's Lincoln Center, where she is  starring in the title role of Dvorak's "Rusalka" at the Metropolitan Opera, one of her signature roles. In 2012, President Obama awarded her the National Medal for the Arts, the highest honor given to artists by the government.
